New Zealand PR pathways compared: SMC vs Green List vs Work to Residence
New Zealand has three main permanent residence pathways for skilled migrants — and picking the right one from the start saves months of wasted effort.
Skilled Migrant Category (SMC)
A points-based system for qualified professionals with a valid job offer from an accredited employer. Points are awarded for age, qualifications, work experience, and the nature of your job offer.
Green List Straight to Residence
For occupations on New Zealand's Green List Tier 1 — mostly specialized healthcare, engineering, ICT, and technical trade roles — this route allows a direct application for residence without first working in New Zealand for a qualifying period.
Work to Residence
For accredited-employer roles that don't qualify for Straight to Residence, Work to Residence lets you build toward residence eligibility after completing a required period of employment on your AEWV.
Which pathway fits you?
The right pathway depends on your occupation's skill classification and how it's listed on the Green List. A proper eligibility assessment before you commit to a job search strategy avoids pursuing the wrong visa category entirely.
