Overview

The Federal Skilled Trades Class is a component of Canada’s economic immigration streams, created for skilled tradespeople worldwide who wish to become permanent residents of Canada.

Application Process Update

To qualify for the FSTC, candidates must:

  • Hold at least two years of full-time (or equivalent part-time) work experience in a skilled trade within the past five years.

  • Have a valid full-time job offer of at least one year supported by a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA), or possess a provincial/territorial qualification certificate in their trade.

  • Meet language requirements: minimum Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 5 for speaking and listening and CLB 4 for reading and writing in English; for French, Niveaux de compétence linguistique canadien (NCLC) 5 for speaking and listening and NCLC 4 for reading and writing.

  • Satisfy the job requirements for the specific skilled trade as defined by the National Occupational Classification (NOC), unless relying on a qualification certificate.

Application Process for FSTC

  • Confirm you meet the program eligibility.

  • Create and submit an Express Entry profile.

  • Wait for an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence.

  • Complete a medical exam by an IRCC-approved physician and supply a police clearance certificate; submit the electronic application.

  • Receive confirmation of permanent resident status and prepare for relocation to Canada.

The FSTC provides a clear route to Canadian permanent residency for qualified tradespersons, recognising their skills and experience.
